CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Ready for a rematch? Former Iowa Gov. Chet Culver is considering another run for the state’s top office, challenging Republican Gov. Terry Branstad in 2014. “I’m certainly keeping my options open,” the one-term Democrat said recently. Some Iowa Republicans were quick to express doubt the former high school teacher will run in 2014, but Branstad spokesman Tim Albrecht said the possibility is one “we take very seriously.”
Culver, 46, believes he had a great record of accomplishment from 2007-11 and is receiving encouragement to run again. “Quite a bit, actually,” said Culver, who now leads The Culver Group that provides strategic consulting to public and private sector entities, primarily on renewable energy issues.
“At the supermarket, people come up to me and tell me I should run again,” he said. “I’m encouraged by the level of support from Democrats, generally.” He’ll begin actively exploring a 2014 run in the next few months, Culver said. “I’m not going to rush it but I’ll continue to have conversations with supporters and friends,” he said. Candidates have until March 14, 2014, to put their names on the primary election ballot. Longtime GOP activist and Branstad associate Doug Gross calls a rematch unlikely. “Branstad would win with a bigger margin,” the Des Moines attorney said. “Iowans would just compare the state of the state with Culver and then Branstad. Case closed.” “Gov. Culver’s years of deficit spending and higher unemployment versus Gov. Branstad’s consistent balancing of Iowa’s budget, coupled with Iowa’s lowest unemployment rate in four years, is a rigorous debate that would give Iowans a clear choice,” Albrecht said. It would be a clear choice, said Culver, who believes he had a great record to run on in 2010, but was hurt by the national economy. “We got through some difficult times,” he said. That includes state assistance to Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Coralville and many other Eastern Iowa communities damaged by flooding in 2008.”
He’ll remind Iowans that during the Culver administration the minimum wage was increased, smoking was banned in nearly all workplaces, preschool opportunities were expanded and more children received health care coverage. And former Gov. Tom Vilsack and his wife Christie Vilsack, who was an unsuccessful congressional candidate this year, also are mentioned as possible candidates. Culver’s not afraid of mixing it up with other Democrats in a primary. Culver won primaries when he ran for his first of two terms as Secretary of State and to get the party’s nomination for governor. “As long as I work hard and take my message to the people I can be successful,” Culver said. Neither is he concerned that one unsuccessful race will disqualify him in the minds of Iowa Democratic voters.
“No one has had that conversation with me,” he said.
Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad suggested he was open to running for re-election in 2014 at his birthday fundraiser on Saturday. Read more: http://dailycaller.com/2012/11/19/branstad-open-to-running-for-re-election/#ixzz2GAeyoOzb
First of all, I heard Culver was considering a run and I had nightmares all night about it! Secondly, my aunt, a lifelong democrat, voted for Branstad over Culver, and she MET Culver
!! He could not beat Branstad in a rematch
! As much as people dislike Branstad they dislike Culver even more! Finally, do you really want to keep a man who is selling Iowa’s assets to China? How about neither of them run!
They’ve had their chance to make things right in Iowa but neither one of them have!
It is time for Iowa to find a new governor. Someone who didn’t grow up with a silver spoon in their mouth in Washington D.C.. Someone who won’t let Iowan’s youth to go to jail for things that their own child has been caught doing (marijuana). Terry Branstad has a vendetta against felons, even though his own son, should be a felon himself after killing a couple while driving. Both parties need to find new candidates! I nominate Greg Hughes!
Greg Hughes understands the problems we have in the States Capitol and we have a lot of them! Our Supreme Court is despicable
! Greg Hughes will put people before politics, profit, and pollution
, unlike Culver and Branstad
We went to the triangle on Blairsferry Road NE and I380 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa where we met the panhandler. Even though we weren’t even in his vicinity (we were across the street) he got mad and yelled at us for “coming around”. We weren’t there asking for any money. We were doing a sign wave exercising our freedom of speech and expression. He acted as if he was entitled to this tiny piece of land and I wonder, does he pay taxes on it? How about the money he makes? He was not nice! We tried to include him offered to “help” him (his sign said “Please help”) but he didn’t want our help he wanted us gone so that he could make money. I’ve given people money on that corner. Never again.
Aside from the rude panhandler we received positive feedback from the drivers! We got a lot of honks and thumbs up. Only one middle finger! You can’t win them all.
The newspaper finally did a story on Greg Hughes but it seemed gender biased. I like Robin Tucker’s idea of taking gender out of the Iowa Constitution. That is something we can do at the grassroots level across the state if we’re tired of the gender bias going on- on all levels.
A couple years ago my son came up from Alabama to visit. He got permission from his father to stay. When I called asking for help he freaked out and filed charges on me. I tried to get a lawyer to help me. There was no way I could go to Alabama. Greg helped me act on behalf of myself and my parents were there in person. Had I not filed the paperwork I did I wouldn’t be here to type this blog. Greg Hughes is the real deal and it doesn’t matter if you are a man or a woman.
I do a lot of court watching. I have gone to I don’t know how many court proceedings over the last few years. I’ve seen these judges in action. People complain about the judges but don’t vote on them. Educate yourselves! There will be more about how to do this on my blogs in the future. Things are spiraling out of control.
Which leads me to why I am voting for Gary Johnson and his Vice President pick Judge Grey. Both know that things have spun out of control within our judicial system. Kids are going to jail and made into criminals over a plant! Why? Because the government can’t figure out how to make money off of it without locking people up for smoking it. Ridiculous is what it is. Hemp could help our environment and essentially save our economy! It’s not like people aren’t going around finding alternatives to smoke to get past the drug testing. I would rather be around a bunch of pot heads than a bunch of people smoking incense! Now they are making up MORE LAWS to restrict the legality of that!
This story is about our “choices” for Congress in District 1, Iowa. What choices have the mainstream media left us with for Congress in this election?
We have the re-run match between the two attorney’s Bert and Ernie (Braley and Lange), the Pro-life nut (Krail), or the factory worker who chairs the Iowa Child Support Advisory Committee to the Supreme Court, Greg Hughes. The only one the media refuses to talk about is the latter candidate! Why? Well listen to Mr. Lynch’s explanation in this video! :Click here for video:
It’s not as if Mr. Hughes hasn’t tried to get the media to talk about his candidacy, they haven’t called and from the way it sounds they’re not going to! I am certain their excuse will be “it’s too late in the election anyway”. This is an outrage! If you aren’t mad you should be!
There is still opportunity to meet Mr. Hughes and discuss with him, in person, things that are bothering you! How?
Well there is a luncheon on Sunday, November 4, 2012 at 1917 Mt. Vernon Road SE in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at 1 pm. If you can’t make it to the luncheon give Greg Hughes a call at 1-319-651-3622 and talk to him yourself! Unlike the other candidates Greg will answer his own phone and talk to you directly!
Could it be because there are people in the media who picks and chooses who gets covered?
One writer told congressional candidate, Greg Hughes, that he’d give him a call on “Monday or Tuesday” it is now Wednesday and no call!
This isn’t just a local problem. This is happening in every city across the country. Good candidates are ignored while bad candidates continue to run our country into the ground. Instead of voting blindly based on television ads- study your candidates!
I am kind of offended that the media is literally ignoring our local candidate for congress. While some outsider gets prime time coverage for being “interesting”. Really? How is Greg Hughes NOT INTERESTING? Does him making it on the Daily Paul as the ONLY liberty candidate in Iowa running for Congress count for anything? How about the fact that he is the chairman of the Iowa Child Support Advisory Committee to the Iowa Supreme Court? Or how about the fact that he is the only viable candidate for congress who isn’t a lawyer!
Why does the media ignore Mr. Hughes? Well they ignore him based on a Governor race (from all four districts and all 99 counties) where he only got 3600 votes. I think that’s pretty good considering he got no real media coverage from the mainstream. Then Mr. Lynch from the Gazette mentioned polls- what polls? How are people supposed to make an informed decision when the media won’t cover them? It’s no wonder people from out of state are running for office! Would the media even know if someone from the Lange campaign didn’t point it out?
Check it out yourself I got it on video!
With little notice the Hughes campaign was able to put together an event that resulted in 33 people coming by asking questions and wanting signs.
Two hours is how long the event took place. There was free food and drinks (including beer). Jim Pate stood outside holding up the “Free Beer and Food” sign while people drove by they yelled “What’s the catch?” There was no catch. Just some good old fashioned face to face time with congressional candidate Greg Hughes!
We will be having another event soon! Stay tuned and go like “Greg Hughes for Congress” on Facebook!
The Greg Hughes for Congress Campaign has opened an office at 1917 Mt. Vernon Road SE. If you are interested in volunteering please give Greg a call at 319-651-3622 or come to the Greg Hughes for Congress Facebook page to discuss the issues or find out how you can help! Click here for more details!
It’s up to us to elect liberty candidates. When our court system is more about profit than doing its job, we have a problem. The only way we can fix it is to get the right people into elected positions. Only we can fix this! Take responsibility for your liberty and get involved today!
Families are being torn apart by the system and the courts are 99.9% of the problem. You can’t make this stuff up. There are too many stories to list on this blog but I will share a couple!
The stories make are enough to make one cringe!
A Iraq Veteran, a victim of the economy was late making his payments to the Child Support and a judge put him in jail over it! How is someone supposed to get caught up on Child Support if they can’t work? To make matters worse the veteran got caught up and even received a refund check but the judge didn’t care he ordered more jail time. That doesn’t make any sense at all. Why are judges wasting our resources to imprison people for debt? If people were going to be imprisoned for their debt then why isn’t Congressman Joe Walsh in prison for being $175,000 behind? Something just isn’t right.
Another Iowa father, Michael, is ordered by a judge to do supervised visits with his mother in-law. Even though she stated that she would “rather take a knife and stick it in his throat than look at his face”. What kind of judge puts a child that they are supposed to be protecting in a predicament like that? Iowa Judges that’s who!
Not only are our families under attack but our civil liberties are as well. We need a congressman who believes in the Constitution and internet freedom. Can we count on Bruce Braley to continue to vote against these attacks on our civil liberties? I don’t know. What will Ben Lange do? Who knows! They are both lawyers and we all know that lawyers aren’t going to stop madness in the judicial system!
It’s up to us to put the power of the people back into the people’s hands. It’s time to step out of the two party paradigm and really study the candidates. What has Bruce Braley done for us over the last six years besides vote against SOPA? He pretends to be a liberty candidate when the issue is high profile. Where does he stand on the Red Light cameras? Where does he stand on anything really? Greg Hughes is recognized as District 1’s “Liberty Candidate” by the Daily Paul
