Man Gets Additional Prison Time for Selling Pills for Candy

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A western Iowa man already convicted on federal fraud charges has been sentenced to more than two years in prison for selling his pain pills for candy.

Donald Washburn of Marion was given the sentence earlier this week in Cedar Rapids. The time will run concurrently to his separate sentence of more than 11 years in prison on various federal fraud charges.

Prosecutors say the 63-year-old sold his prescription Oxycodone medication to other inmates for candy bars while he was held in the Linn County Jail awaiting sentencing on the investment fraud case.

Washburn was convicted in February of bilking investors out of more than $800,000 in phony gambling and mining ventures.

Doesn’t seem to me like this guy even needs these pain pills if he is trading them for candy bars!

Local Therapist Offers Tips for Talking with Children About Connecticut Shooting

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The nation remains shocked and devastated after the Connecticut School Shooting that killed 27.

Some Cedar Rapids parents told TV9 on Friday they wanted to pull their kids out of school for the day when they heard the news.

“I just wanted to come get him and go to a movie or go shopping or something, just to spend time with him because other parents can’t do that tonight,” said Tracy Chambers, a parent.

Chambers, like many others, didn’t pull her child out of school in the middle of the day, but she had a big hug waiting when the dismissal bell rang. “I can’t wait to hug him,” she said.

Frank Ackley, of Cedar Rapids, was waiting to pick up his grandchildren on Friday and couldn’t help but wonder about their safety.

They weren’t the only parents who thought about picking their child up before school let out! I thought about doing it too!  We hugged our little one just a little tighter last night and spoke about the shooting and what she should do if anything like that happens in Cedar Rapids.  People don’t think things like this could happen here but forget the Ralston Foods shooting.

Father Can’t Explain Massive Head Injury of His 17-month-old

childCEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Investigators testified Friday that Zyriah Schlitter, who is accused of killing his 17-month-old daughter Kamryn in 2010, changed his account of what happened the day she died in three different interviews and never could explain her severe bruising and massive head injuries.

Schlitter, 25, in the police interview said he didn’t notice the bruising on Karmryn’s face March 15 until a DHS employee told him after the daycare she attended reported it. He noticed it then but didn’t know how it happened.

Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Special Agent Darrell Simmons told Schlitter he knew the doctors told him the injuries were not an accident. The injuries were inflicted by Schlitter or his ex-girlfriend Amy Parmer, he said.

“It didn’t happen from a trip and fall,” Simmons said. She was either shaken violently or dropped on her head or slammed down on her head, according to (doctors).”

Schlitter starts crying a few minutes later and says he didn’t think Parmer hurt her.

“I don’t know,” Schlitter said. “That’s why you’re investigating. I don’t appreciate this. We need to stop. Please.”

Schlitter is charged with first-degree murder and child endangerment resulting in death. If convicted, he faces life in prison without parole.

This case is still going on. I feel so badly for all the little children who are losing their lives to self-centered selfish adults.

Ryan Lunza named Connecticut Child Killer turns into a Social Media Nightmare & an Attack on Gun Rights

My thoughts and prayers go out to the families who lost loved ones, especially the little ones. What a sad and terrible tragedy.

ABC News reported this incident for hours. At first, they reported the shooter was 24-year-old Ryan Lunza. They said that “he was the new face of mental health”. Social media networks went crazy targeting Ryan. Then Ryan made a post that shocked thousands. Now, ABC News “can’t be clear on who the shooter is” now they report it was “20-year-old Adam Lunza”.

Nonetheless, they claim that no matter which brother is was the “relationship was still the same”. I have a problem with this kind of reporting because these two men are not the same people. There didn’t seem to be a social profile of Adam that I could find. I couldn’t imagine what Ryan is going through. He just lost his family and his brother is the most hated man in America now. I looked at his profile on Facebook before he took it down and I didn’t see anything that would show he was a violent person. His profile and little conversation seemed to revolve around art. Now, Ryan is going to be interrogated by the police because there is another crime scene at his parents home.

New information found: Ryan Lanza’s ID apparently was taken by his brother, the suspected Connecticut gunman Now the news is reporting that authorities don’t believe Ryan was involved. What a way to find out your whole family is dead.
The politicians and media didn’t take long to make the tragedy about them and more gun control. President Obama got on air to speak about the situation. He looked like he was crying.

“We are going to have to come together to take action on this” said Obama

Then I came across this story: http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/regions/americas/united-states/121214/sandy-hook-elementary-school-shooting-connecticu

Guns obtained legally

CBS News reported that preliminary information suggested that Adam Lanza, the shooting suspect who killed himself in the school, obtained the guns he used in the shooting legally.

A law enforcement official told CBS News that the guns found at the scene were a Sig Sauer, a Glock 9 and a Bushmaster rifle.
Meanwhile, in Michigan, the Senate and House have passed a bill that would allow the carrying of concealed weapons in areas including schools, churches, day cares and stadiums.
For more on that, read here.

I am a parent. I have an elementary aged child who is in school right now. I don’t know if I trust other people’s judgement to keep my child or anyone’s children safe at this point! What do you think of this situation? Do you have children or grandchildren that attend public schools? Are you worried about something like this happening in your community? What can we do about these mass shootings that won’t infringe on our Second Amendment right to bear arms? Should we allow concealed weapons in our schools and churches like they do in Michigan? Michigan approves concealed weapons in schools, churches

The public school system has taken it upon themselves to teach our children about sex and drugs but teach them nothing about gun safety or what to do if someone comes into their school with a gun. When will our teachers be given the training they need to keep themselves and their classrooms safe?
