City’s hotel in downtown Cedar Rapids set for a $3.7 million face-lift
Mayor Corbett said “curb appeal” is important to the city
I seriously question the legality of this mayors actions over the last few years about this event center. I would like to see where in Iowa Code he is allowed to hire John Frew without going through the bidding process and just how he is doing this without the vote of the people. Our streets are more important than curbs! Stop spending our money on things we don’t technically need downtown and start fixing our infrastructure and streets!
City Hall agrees to special tax for new Medical District
A property tax levy of $3.75 per $1,000 is intended for the area
My grandmother is rolling in her grave over this one! Thirty years ago my grandmother worried that her home on 9th Street SE would be lost to the “Medical District”. http://easterniowahealth.com/2011/01/14/commission-asks-where-mercy-draws-the-line-on-new-parking-lots/ My grandmother’s house is still standing but I know she would not like what is taking place in her home town.
Then there is the fire station. I wonder if any of the city leaders have ever had a house fire. You can live three blocks from the fire department and it feels like an eternity before they actually get there! Instead of putting the fire station where it was (which is 6 feet higher than the temporary spot) the city is putting it on the East side of town. While I was at a meeting, the man who works for the police sub station told me that the city was not going to put the Central Fire Station on the west side of town.
I can tell you why the city won’t invest in the west side of town and why the Czech Museum had to be put up on a pedestal foundation they know that if we ever flood to the size we did in 2008 that it will wipe out the west side. Why, you might ask? Because city officials are bound and determined to build on the DUMP that backed our river up!
